Planning Steps

Considering a new home in Wasco County?  An addition to the house or extension on the garage for an in-home business?
Splitting property up, to sell some off?  Any change or expansion of land use in Wasco County that occurs outside of the city
limits could require a permit.  It is best to contact the Wasco County Planning & Development Department as early as possible
when considering a change.

Many uses are permitted outright without further steps.  Many more are possible to obtain a permit for.  There are a few uses
that cannot be lawfully allowed in some areas of the County.  The earlier an applicant speaks to a planner, the better prepared
they can be to find the easiest way to accomodate the desired use on their property.  The County is glad to help anyone
shopping for property, to better understand the potential uses and existing constraints on a given parcel of land, allowing the
purchaser to make a more informed decision regarding the purchase.

If the desired land use change or expansion requires a permit, this permit will be processed in the most timely manner possible.
There are specific requirements for the amount and duration of public notice to be given on all permit applications.  Permit
applications are processed in cycles that allow for the appropriate notice and comment periods.  Building activity is also
seasonal and though land use permits can be prepared year-round, and are generally good for a year, a considerable backlog
can develop in the spring and summer months.  The planner assisting an applicant can usually provide some idea of the
required time frame to the applicant at the pre-application conference.
